Avenged Sevenfold Review

After the 2009 death of drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, A7X was dealt with the trouble of finding a new drummer. Former Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy, who was signed on for tour and the new album Nightmare for only 2010 until they found a new drummer for tours in 2011, Arin Ilejay. The newest single released was "Not Ready to Die" which was used for the second DLC of Call of Duty Black Ops:Escalation. The song was featured for the zombies map, Call of the Dead, and it was used as an easter egg in the game, which means if you did a certain set of objectives, the song would play while you're playing the game of zombies. The album Nightmare, featured songs that were either people's fears or issues. "Nightmare" is a heavy metal-like song that contains meaningful lyrics and a soft chorus. The lyrics are basically telling about the fear of going to hell and what is like down there. "Buried Alive" is one of two softer rock songs on the album. The fear and act of being buried alive is the main focus of this song. The softest rock song on here is "So Far Away" which is actually about the passing of "The Rev" and trying to reach out to him in heaven. Accompianed by soft electric guitar riffs and licks. And finally "Welcome to the Family" which is a hard rock song, that in concert is used to introduce you to their crazy and messed up family. A7X's 2011 tour that made a stop in Council Bluffs, IA for the annual River Riot, they played with Three Days Grace, Sick Puppies, and Bullet For My Valentine. Songs they played were off all of their albums, songs off Nightmare included, "Welcome to the Family", "So Far Away", "Nightmare", and "Buried Alive". Here is a link to A7X's music.

NCA All-Star Volleyball Game Coverage

Red All-Stars win 5 game thriller against the Blue All- Stars

One-hundred and five kills out of 207 points scored may be the biggest stat that highlighted the night in this epic 5 game Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game. Katie Hughes(Seward) was an outside hitter for the Blue All-Stars and not only was she tied for most team kills at seven with two other teammates, but she was one of the most dominant players of the game. Hughes seemed to take control of her team whenever she was playing. She even controlled where the setter was suppose to set the ball for an opportunity at a kill either for herself or a teammate such as Cassie Effken(Lincoln Pius X) or Elaine Kramer(Gretna), who also had seven kills.
Hughes showed why she was one of the most dominant outside hitters statewide last year.
Kelsey Stratman(Skutt Catholic) also had a “killer” night, recording a match-high nine kills.
Before the game, coaches high-fived each other. The teams came up with their own breakdown chants. The Blue team would gather in a circle and did the very well known and popular dance, “the Bernie” after an ace.
The players were not only introduced before the game and received their all-star awards, but they were introduced live on tv, which could’ve been the first time for most of the girls.
After the 3rd set, the Most Valuable Teammate Award was handed out. For the Red All-Stars, it went to Lea Sack(Lincoln Pius X), who seemed incredibly shocked her teammates picked her, and for the Blue All-Stars, Cassie Effken, who seemed just as excited to receive the award as she was to be playing in the game in general.
The atmosphere of Lincoln North Star, not only by the players, but from the fans, was excitement. The place was rockin’ and shakin ‘after each score or huge play.
Set One was very intense. The Red All-Stars took an early timeout because the Blue All-Stars jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Although the timeout seemed timely and as if it had helped, they had dug themselves into a pretty deep hole.
Back-to-back kills by outside hitter, Claire White(Exeter-Milligan), put the score at 7-4. But they fell back to their old ways and couldn’t always capitalize on opportunities. White had 3 more kills after another set of back-to-back kills .The score was now 16-14.
The Blue All-Stars scored four unanswered points, topped off with a huge kill by Hughes. But out of nowhere, the Red All-Stars starting playing like they were all stars. They scored eleven points while holding the Blue All-Stars to two points to take Set One in a miraculous comeback that was sealed with three kills and two aces.
Set Two was as intense as the first. What can be better than a comeback? Extra play. Blue took an early lead of 13-7, but allowed four kills in a row to Red that put the score at 13-11. After back-to-back kills by Stratman and an ace by Maggie Anderson(Lincoln Southwest), the score was tied at 17-17. The set went on to be tied six other times. After Blue took the 25-24 game-point lead, Red called a timeout to think it over. Blue won Set Two, 26-24 after a costly mistake of a hit for Red went out of bounds.
Set Three was similar to Set One in both gameplay and result. Red jumped out to an early lead at 4-1 and eventually 14-10. At this point in time, all looked lost for Blue in this set, but then the gap was closed to 17-15 and then tied at 17-17. Red took a much needed timeout as they looked tired, winded, and frustrated. After the timeout, it looked as if Red was ready to play, but they gave Blue their first lead at 18-17. And as soon as Red took the lead back at 19-18, Blue stole a point to tie it at 19-19.Two huge kills and an ace later, the score was now 24-20 for Blue and the victory of Set Three was capped off with another kill.
The match was now 2-1, Blue.
Set Four was the least exciting. It was heavily one-sided by Red. It was a set full of kills and mistakes by Blue. With the most kills in this set than any other, the front line of the Red All-Stars were busy and dominant. At one point, after a Scarlett Howerter(Lincoln Pius X) kill, the score was 20-13. And Morgan Heise(Wood River) sealed the win with a kill to take Set Four, 25-16. It was seen as a blowout.
The match was tied at 2-2.
Set Five. A set that is not typically played, except in close games like these. It’s a set to 15 points. After, two of the first three serves for Jordan Chohon(Columbus Scotus) were aces, Blue took an early 3-0 lead and Red took an early timeout. Then Red pulled it closer, 3-2. And after two kills and a block, they took the lead at 8-5. Just a few points later, another huge kill by Red put them ahead 10-6.

It was 14-7, game-point and match-point after an ace by Cristina Silver(Grand Island). Then Silver served it and Hughes called for a set into her zone. The ball slammed into Red’s hardwood floor, it seemed like a momentum shifting kill, but with the score 14-8, it was a longshot. Blue served on the game-point and match-point, but couldn’t quite pull a comeback out after hitting it out to hand a 15-8 Set Five victory and a 3-2 match victory to the Red All-Stars.

Story of Huppert

This is Alli Huppert. Small describes the kind of town she lives in. Small describes the school she attends. Small describes the size of the newspaper staff she works on. Small describes the student body that shows little interest. She gets through to kids to get any story that she can. Which is not easy because there aren’t many out to collect.

The first thing that strikes you about Alli is her calm, cool, and collected laid back mood. She is not afraid to tell you what you want to hear or answer what you want to know. This helps her capture the best stories because people feel comfortable around her. Coming from a small school can be tough when it comes to journalism, but you may also easily find the best stories.

This is a story about becoming a writer for the newspaper and yearbook. But also what she did before becoming a writer and an editor to be this year. She was in speech which can help writing as well. Such as grammar and proper use of certain things. This story is not only about a newspaper writer/editor. It’s about someone who has a true passion for writing news and collecting news.

Who is Alli? Alli is a 16-year-old junior and editor at Blair High School. But that’s during the day. Truth is, she is a dancer outside of writing. For almost her whole life, she has danced. Tap, ballet, jazz, and is now signing up ballroom dancing. She was also in FBLA. Which stands for Future Business Leaders of America. She is involved in many ways with her community.

It is features that take over her writing. It’s a small school, so to get good information, many features are included in the newspaper. Having to go out into the school that may not be interested at all times with the news, Alli decides who to interview by simply walking through the school and seeing what people are interested in. Get the scoop on new things to do and places to go and ask those same people about these things and develop a feature out of almost nothing to work with and put out the newest feature story. The school is very generic itself. They aren’t the best at sports and the student body isn’t big into journalism and seems to not care as much as the students that write it do. With such a small student body, the staff is only around 7-10 people. So everyone has to pitch in, all in their own ways. Which can be challenging, but fun at the same time.

Of course what makes Alli interesting is her real passion for writing and journalism all together. This passion led Alli in newspaper and journalism. She would love to major in Journalism when it comes to college time. But only as a writer. Alli would broadcast to an extent, but would like to keep the writing aspect of newspaper and journalism. Alli wants to keep the exciting feeling of unfolding a newspaper and reading an article opposed to radio, TV, and even online news. It’s just not the same to her. Alli also enjoys photography. She thinks fun and exciting, but her passion for writing brings her back to writing news. As Alli becomes older, she is deciding what she wants to focus on a certain kind of writing. Alli would love to cover concerts and movies. She wants to write music and entertainment. That is also a passion of hers. And that’s Alli Huppert, the writer, the editor, the junior from Blair, in a nutshell.

Penn State

Well, the upside for the football program, is that they get to play. Penalty or 4 years no football? Own up and take the penalty and that's what they did. Was the NCAA a little harsh? Possibly. But was it well deserved? Definitely. They aren't going to get any good players for 4 years, plus players may leave to actually play for something, rather than just playing for Penn State with no postseason. And if they don't want to play football, the scholarship still pays for their education. So it's like wasting athletic scholarships because they almost become academic scholarships, which is not typically why an athlete is there.

NHSPA 2012 Camp

Learning a lot of new things and reiterating some of the old stuff too. Newest thing today was rhetoric and the proper was to use it. Repitition of the same beginning and sort of filling in the blank with an adjective so to say. Look forward to learning more and getting down to business onm Day 2.

Sports Journalism and Broadcasting

I would like to learn more about interviewing and how to keep track of the things said in an interview. I want and do specialize in sports writing such as features and notes and stats on the recent games. I'm most interested in having my own sports radio with a friend of mine from school. We're both interested in the exact same field of careers. That's why we will both most likely end up as dorm roommates in college. I've been interested in sports since about the age of 5. It's my dream to cover Husker football games and travel to other colleges for the baseball games as well.
